Die Rapperin, Produzentin und Musikpädagogin Isatta Sheriff aus East London macht seit 2000 Musik und überzeugt mit ihrer eindrücklichen Fähigkeit, Bilder mit Worten zu malen. Aktuell ist sie mit ihrer neuen 4-Track-EP „A Kind of Biography“ am Start. Isattas Debütproduktionsprojekt wird von einer Vielzahl talentierter Mitarbeiter:innen aus der Klassik- und Jazzwelt begleitet: Xvngo (KOKOROKO), Dominic McCannon (Steamdown), Luke Wynter (Nubian Twist), Lizzie Ball (Adele, Kylie Minogue), Nigel Kennedy und Eleanor Strings.

Die EP ermöglicht einen Einblick in den Londoner Stadtteil Tower Hamlets. Eine industrielle Geräuschkulisse zeigt innerstädtische Märkte, Verkehrsdienste, unheimliche Wege und den überwältigenden Tumult, der von Baustellen ausgeht, die das gentrifizierte Gebiet verschlingen. Der Sound ist durch und durch abwechslungsreich, die Lyriks introspektiv. Der Track „Ode To The Heads“ überzeugt vor allem deshalb, weil er zum Nachdenken anregt und gleichzeitig die talentierte Vielseitigkeit von Isatta am Mic demonstriert. Der letzte Song „A Kind of Biography“ strotzt nur so vor Positivität und versprüht von Anfang an zu 100% Wohlfühl-Vibes!

I wanted to produce a project that sounded like east London and included HipHop. The association of grime and Tower Hamlets is common knowledge but I wanted to demonstrate that hip hop ran alongside this movement. My goal is to integrate slower hip hop tempos and the industrial soundscape of grime, while merging live instruments that represent my musical journey and the people I have met along the way.”

Darüber hinaus ist Isatta Sheriff Gründerin von Doctored Sound, einer musikpädagogischen Management- und Beratungsagentur. Durch Jugendprogramme und Workshops gestaltet Sheriff die Landschaft der lokalen Musikindustrie neu, indem sie Wissen und Unterstützung für diejenigen bereitstellt, denen oft die Chance verwehrt wird, ihr volles Potenzial auszuschöpfen: „Doctored Sound is a response to me being continually underestimated – it’s been about having a voice. Because how you enter the industry is important. By providing younger artists with trustworthy, experienced knowledge, Doctored Sound is helping build careers in a supported manner.“

„A lot of people believe that the power is with corporations, people with the money. But actually the power is where the music is and the people who create it. And the more we take control the better.” Was sie über die Jahre gelernt hat und worauf ihr Wirken abzielt beschreibt sie selbst im Interview mit The Source wie folgt: „The key lesson I have learned is authenticity. It’s important to never forget your love for music and to work with people who are passionate about similar styles. You should also experiment sonically from time to time. I’ve learned that you should push through and keep making music even if you have things going on because there will never be a perfect time. I held back so much early on because of drama but drama doesn’t stop sometimes so you just need to keep going.“

Die britische Underground HipHop Künstlerin hat viel Liebe für Jungle, Garage und Grime. Isattas Rolemodel ist ohne Zweifel Lauryn Hill wie sie vibe rating verriet: „… she is my favorite female MC because she goes beyond the music. Her flow, delivery and passion represent HipHop to me. And i love Rakim and Talib Kweli. I love Talib’s his remake of Nina Simone’s „For Women“. I have learned from so many people but Rashad Ringo Smith (Biggie, Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes) has definitely taught me a lot about music. He introduced me to some big names in New York and being around him always feels like a giant music lesson.“

Mit ihrem Podcast Heart To The ART beweist sie, wie gut sie sich im Gleichgewicht zwischen der Unterstützung anderer und dem Ausbau ihres eigenen Businesses befindet: „Creating a sustainable career is important. You have to find what you’re good at and become an expert in it. For me, my passion is discovering music and art. So I started a platform, Heart to Art, where I can talk about what I love – it’s opened so many doors for me.” Sheriff, die in der Regel nach ihren eigenen Regeln lebt, setzt sich dafür ein, dass Künstler:innen auf ihre eigenen Stärken vertrauen, anstatt auf die Unterstützung großer Unternehmen zu warten: “Get yourself as educated as possible within your speciality, build on your hobbies. Don’t fight for people to make or play your work. Go make your own mixtape, be a guest on a tastemaker’s project, ask your mates who they listen to and write to their station, ask to be played.”

What I’d say to women is bring your personality and your interests – because everything is marketing but it doesn’t have to be forced. No one else can be you.”
