KVAN

Dancehall-Künstlerin IKhabuya Vanessa Marion, geboren in Uganda Jinja, ist euch vielleicht unter dem Namen KVAN bekannt. Sie selbst nennt sich das „goodest girl around town“, sie definitiert sich nach eigener Aussage über Originalität, Einzigartigkeit und die Einfachheit der Dinge: „I believe my voice is unique, my lyrics are originally build from within and the output is simple. My creativity requires a stable state of mind that allows my imagination to go places.“

Music I swear you should give me a ring, you take up my mind there’s no concentrating, its funny when mi sing, it feels like everything …“

Der Song „Show Dem“ kann als hundertprozentiges Anthem von KVAN verstanden warden: „This was the first song that I got chance to freely do in studio, with less limitation. It says ‚you have to show them‘ who you are.“ Der Song beginnt mit einer Einführung in das, woran KVAN glaubt. „I am musically and I go to my intentions and dreams in it. I also express my passion for music and advise everyone with something in them to show it.” Zu ihren Songs „Show Dem“, „Back Off“ and „Be Happy“ hat die Künstlerin die stärkste Bindung: “When I listen to ‚Show Dem‘ I hear someone telling me to push on and let the world know what I am. ‚Back off‘ on the other hand came in as a reflex. I was angry at something and didn’t want to talk about it and when I went to studio and did it. That’s when I acknowledged it had got to me. It says ‚Back Off‘ but then later calms me down itself by advising me that. That’s how people can be sometimes: Bakuza mimilo when they see you succeed (they get jeolous when they see you succeed), Naye omukisa gwa Mukama temuli buyinike (but God’s blessing has no limitation), Kukiriza nakulemelako byebisinga (believing and persistence is what’s best), Embrace your dream, y’affi leak it like a place …“

KVANs musikalische Reise beginnt bereits im Alter von neun Jahren. „I was that child that would hardly talk about what hurt me, so I usually wrote down almost everything and put melody to it and somehow felt like I spoke to someone.” Ihren ersten Song schreibt sie für ihre Tante, die zu dem Zeitpunkt bei einer Telekommunikationsfirma arbeitet und ständig mit den neusten technischen Gadgets und Handys nach Hause kommt. Die kleine KVAN ist nachhaltig beeindruckt, denn sie denkt, dass all diese Geräte auch ihrer Tante selbst gehören. Also fragt sie, was sie tun muss, um auch so ein teures Geschenk zu bekommen. Ihre Antwort: KVAN solle doch einen Werbesong machen, dann könne sie alle Geräte der Firma bekommen. Eine Ansage, die sich das Mädchen nicht zweimal sagen lässt: Nur kurze Zeit später steht sie vor ihrer Tante mit einem eigens geschriebenen Song – die das Ganze allerdings nur als Spaß meinte und die junge Künstlerin nicht ernst nimmt. KVAN probiert es weiter, nimmt den Song gemeinsam mit ihrem Bruder, der auf verschiedenen Tischen trommelt, um einen Beat zu schaffen, auf einer leeren Kassette auf. Ihre Leidenschaft für Songwriting soll nicht mehr weggehen –  ihr Gefühl, mit ihrer Musik nicht ernstgenommen zu werden, bleibt jedoch ebenfalls noch lange Zeit bestehen.

Im selben Jahr gründet KVAN die Band Red3. Der Name ist eine Referenz an die in Uganda berühmte Girlgroup Blu3. Sie ist die einzige Songwriterin in der Band und bekommt schnell das Gefühl, dass die anderen sich nicht genauso reinhängen wie sie. Als die drei Künstlerinnen nach der Schule bei einem Radiosender auflaufen, um sich Gehör zu verschaffen, fliegen sie raus. Doch KVAN lässt sich ihre Leidenschaft nicht nehmen. Die Geschichte von Red3 endet nach nur drei Monaten. Sie selbst macht weiter – allerdings im Geheimen. Nur ihr Bruder weiß von ihren musikalischen Ambitionen.

Dabei ist jede Musikrichtung gut genug für die junge Künstlerin, alle möglichen Genres finden Platz in ihrem Songbook. Dieses hält sie so geheim, dass es sich anfühlt, als würde sie ein Körperteil verlieren, als es ihr abhandenkommt. Als KVAN im Highschool-Alter ist, nimmt sie an Rap-Battles teil, schreibt aber im Geheimen weiterhin an Reggaesongs und lässt sich auch von der R&B-Ära um Artists wie Chris Brown und Ne-Yo beeinflussen. Mit 15 kam dann Dancehall dazu, wobei sie sich von Acts wie Konshens und Busy Signal inspirieren ließ.

Ein Jahr später wird sie erneut Teil einer Band namens Gangmos. Sie ist das einzige Mädchen. Die Band selbst löst sich bald wieder auf, nachdem ihr Frontmann viel zu früh verstirbt. Durch die Arbeit mit Gangmos bekommt KVAN jedoch Zugang zu einem Studio und lernt einen Producer kennen, der klare Vorstellungen von ihrem Sound hat: “My music was determined by the producers choice and whenever I’d give a Dancehall approach in my way he’d remind me that female artists that were trending at the time in my country were all doing R&B and my style was for men, so he’d switch me up.” Parallel dazu sammelt die Künstlerin Gospel-Erfahrung in der Kirche. Als wichtige Inspirationsquellen zu dieser Zeit nennt sie Maka Diamond aus Jamaika und Cynthia Morgan aus Nigeria, die große Erfolge in Uganda feiern.

Auch vor ihren Eltern hält KVAN ihre Musik geheim: „I was only afraid of them refusing me to go the music direction because they were so much about school and education. And in the time, musicians in Uganda were perceived as drug addicts, chaotic people and school drop outs. My parents were also never people that listened to music or even watched a music show, I was only afraid they would refuse me and I wouldn’t have wished to disobey.” Ihr Geheimnis fliegt auf, als ihr Cousin ein Poster von ihr sieht und ihre Eltern anruft. “They worried a lot and didn’t think I’d persist with it. Next my mom watched me on TV and I could see the excitement in her eyes, although as a mother, with a daughter in an industry such as this, she couldn’t help but worry. But my persistence made them have no choice but to accept me that way with time.”

KVANs wichtigste Inspirationsquellen für ihre Songs sind die Dinge, die um sie herum passieren – vor allem die Natur: „Uganda had a very beautiful scenery, that expands imagination of any creative mind, when given chance to.” Ein besonderes Anliegen ist es ihr, diese Natur zu schützen. Als besonders relevanten Faktor nennt sie den Zugang zu sauberem Trinkwasser in ihrem Land, weshalb sie sich mit der Organisation Viva con Agua zusammengetan hat: „The Human Right to water entitles everyone to sufficient, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic uses. I‘m glad to have moved with the Viva Con Agua team to Moroto, Karamoja (North Eastern Uganda) to provide save water for communities that side. Water is a necessity and it is such a privilege that Viva Con Agua embraces it in ways such as providing boreholes, teaching people how to wash hands with it, consume it clean and also use music to work the norm. Sustainable water means a nation that can be water self-sufficient: ensuring there is enough water to meet multiple needs, from agriculture to municipal and industrial. Water sustainability also means effective and holistic management of water resources. Water is at the core of sustainable development and is critical for socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems and for human survival itself. It is vital for reducing the global burden of disease and improving the health, welfare and productivity of populations. These populations consist of the people that listen, learn and/are inspired by music. It is therefore very important that musicians such as me can use ART to create water: using songs and performances to raise funds in order to make water sustainable.“

Doch das ist nicht das einzige soziale Engagement, das KVAN am Herzen liegt. In Female Empowerment sieht KVAN die Chance, überhaupt gehört zu werden: “A chance to be confident about myself and show all females out there that we can. There’s an African proverb that goes ‚If you educate a man, you educate an individual. But if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.‘ In Uganda female* MCs have not been consistent. Many emerge but go silent with time, especially after having children, getting married or other factors that cause them to divert from music. I have had a chance to do a Women Empowerment song alongside Lady Slyke, Tushi Polo, Vkaycee, Afekuru and Ella dubbed ‚B.A.D‘. B – bold, A – Assertive, D – Divas. In this song, we execute different energy in the various verses as we portray that women can perform just as men can. It being that the males dominate the music industry as regards numbers, it is easier to recognize a female artist that’s stepping out musically. However, so many are emerging by the years and if the challenges faced by females in the industry are not addressed early enough, they will keep emerging as they fall.“
